Question for written answer E-004052-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Clara Eugenia Aguilera García (S&D)

Subject:  Price crisis in the fruit and vegetables sector because of the Russian embargo
 Answer in writing

The regulation laying down further temporary exceptional support measures for producers of certain fruit and vegetables, which establishes measures to tackle the Russian embargo during the first six months of 2015, is proving ineffective at alleviating the sector’s poor situation even slightly. There is an urgent need to extend it to crops not covered, such as aubergines and courgettes, and to increase the quotas for those that were.

The EU fruit and vegetables market is now producing a surplus, because of both European exports that cannot be sold to the Russian Federation, and the build-up of shipments from third countries on the EU market. The ineffectiveness of this campaign is leading to severe losses for farmers in Spanish provinces such as Almería and Granada, whose economies are closely linked to the fruit and vegetables trade.

Does the Commission not take the view that there is now an urgent need to raise the withdrawal prices for products affected by the Russian embargo, and to include new products, such as aubergines?

In the case of tomatoes, has the Commission considered the possibility of their being sent for processing, so that they can subsequently be released for handing out free of charge, since this is a measure that has worked well for other products?
