Parliamentary questions

3 June 2015
E-004925/2015(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Hogan on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-004925/2015

The Commission announced the conclusion of negotiations of an Agreement on the protection of geographical indications with Morocco on 16 January 2015. The names to be protected by the future agreement are those that were registered in the EU at the cut-off date, i.e. on 9 January 2013. About 3 000 EU GIs will benefit from direct and automatic protection in Morocco as from the entry into force of the Agreement (see also E-001095/2015(1)).

As the Honourable Member points out, the negotiated text foresees an update mechanism of the names to be protected through the Joint Committee. The Joint Committee will only be in a position to meet once the Agreement has been signed by both parties and has entered into force.
