Parliamentary questions

Question for written answer E-005671-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Heubuch (Verts/ALE)

 Subject:  Animal welfare
 Answer in writing

1. Ensuring better animal welfare is a key concern for EU citizens. The agriculture ministers of the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany recently supported this demand and asked the Commission to come forward with a proposal for comprehensive animal welfare legislation in line with the latest scientific evidence. A strong, competent and independent management structure at Commission level is key to ensuring that animal welfare issues can be tackled. Is it true that the Commission is planning to abolish the very unit which would fit such a purpose, namely the animal welfare unit within DG SANTE?

2. The Commission’s Work Programme for 2015 contains no new proposals on animal welfare. Does this mean that animal welfare is not a priority for this Commission, and that we will see no legislative action this year? Will the Commission send Parliament an updated report on its activity in this field? When will it commit to presenting a binding legal instrument regarding animal welfare?

3. Does the Commission have plans to extend the method of production labelling from eggs to other food products, so that consumers have the information they need about production systems and can make affirmative choices that support more sustainable and animal-welfare-friendly methods?
