Question for written answer E-007951-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Bart Staes (Verts/ALE)

Subject:  Terms of reference and time frame for JRC study to establish the current state of EU regulation in paper and card food packaging
 Answer in writing

There are growing concerns about the lack of harmonised EU regulation for chemicals in paper and card food packaging. In a reply to a letter from ChemTrust(1), the Commission’s DG Health and Food Safety states the following:

‘The Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has […] recently started a “baseline” study to fully establish the current state of the EU market and regulatory situation concerning food contact materials for which there are no specific harmonised measures at EU level. The baseline study will help to consider all possible options going forwards.’

Could the Commission please publish the terms of reference and time frame for this study?
