Question for written answer E-009000-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Emmanouil Glezos (GUE/NGL) , Kostas Chrysogonos (GUE/NGL) , Stelios Kouloglou (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Protection of Europe's cultural heritage
 Answer in writing

The European Cultural Convention (Paris, 1954) expresses the view that each Contracting Party shall regard the objects of European cultural value placed under its control as integral parts of the common cultural heritage of Europe and shall take appropriate measures to safeguard them.

In the European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (London, 1969), the Contracting Parties undertake to control and maintain their finds, to take protective measures and to prohibit illicit excavations, etc.

During the German occupation of Greece, the Nazis seized, among other things, some treasures of Ancient Greek civilisation.

In view of the above, will the Commission say:
Does it consider that the provisions of the above Conventions are being respected, given that the German state refuses to return to Greece the archaeological treasures pillaged there?
What measures will establish growth oriented to the environment and culture (as required by the territorial priorities for Europe) so as to safeguard different cultural identities, especially in countries where development is lagging behind, as in crisis-ridden Greece?
The historical heritage of each country forms part of the common heritage of humanity. What regulatory measures does Europe intend to take in response to the destruction of the cultural heritage by ISIS?
