Question for written answer E-010420-15
to the Commission
Rule 130

Subject:  Adverse weather conditions for farming in Spain
 Answer in writing

This year started with floods in January which then gave way to an extreme heatwave in May and hail storms in June. These adverse weather conditions have already caused the loss of a great many crops in various autonomous communities, for instance in Andalusia, the two Castilles, Extremadura and Aragón, where fruit trees, olive groves, vineyards and cereal crops have all been seriously hit. Stock is suffering too from the lack of grass in the fields. What is more, 80% of the regions affected were hit by drought last year.

1. Is the Commission aware of how critical the situation in the sector is for certain regions and crops and of the economic repercussions of this on farmers and rural communities?

2. Is the Commission planning to bring forward payment of CAP subsidies to farmers in order to alleviate their financial problems and help them with the next sowing season and insurance?
