E-011754/2015(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Vella on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-011754/2015

According to the Habitats Directive(1) Member States shall take appropriate steps to avoid, in Natura 2000 sites, the deterioration of habitats and the disturbance of species for which the areas have been designated.

According to the first River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) of the Appennino Meridionale, submitted further to the Water Framework Directive (WFD)(2), the ecological status of Lake Varano is moderate. The main pressure indicated by the river basin authority is eutrophication. Therefore, it appears that the competent river basin authorities are aware of the problems of lake Varano.

The objectives for the status of each water body, the programme of measures to achieve such objectives and the justification for exemptions, where applicable, shall be included in the second RBMP to be submitted to the Commission by 22 March 2016, and will then be verified for compliance with the WFD.

The Commission has recently addressed a set of specific recommendations to Italy, based on the assessment of the current programme of measures included in the first RBMPs, which have highlighted several implementation problems(3). The Italian competent authorities are expected to implement such recommendations in the second RBMPs.
