Question for written answer E-012154-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nicola Caputo (S&D)

 Subject:  Existing gavage-free production
 Answer in writing

According to Article 25(2) of the 1999 Recommendations concerning domestic geese adopted under the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes: ‘Until new scientific evidence on alternative methods and their welfare aspects is available, the production of foie gras shall be carried out only where it is current practice and then only in accordance with standards laid down in domestic law. In any case, the competent authorities shall monitor this type of production to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the recommendation’.

— Is the Commission aware that the production of foie gras through force-feeding represents serious risks to animal health?— Is it aware of foie gras production where force-feeding is not used?— If gavage-free production does exist, would this not be sufficient to demonstrate the need to end the use of gavage elsewhere, especially given that it is a luxury product and not essential for a balanced diet?
