Question for written answer E-012751-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Sirpa Pietikäinen (PPE)

Subject:  Need for a new European Food Safety Authority study on the production of foie gras
 Answer in writing

Article 25(2) of the 1999 Recommendation concerning domestic geese of the Standing Committee of the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes provides that: ‘Until new scientific evidence on alternative methods and their welfare aspects is available, the production of foie gras shall be carried out only where it is current practice and then only in accordance with standards laid down in domestic law. In any case, the competent authorities shall monitor this type of production to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the recommendation.’

Does the Commission think that new scientific knowledge in the area of animal welfare has become available since 1999, and that it would therefore be useful to commission a new European Food Safety Authority study on the welfare effects of foie gras production?
