Question for written answer E-013000-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marian Harkin (ALDE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Imprisonment of Fadhel Abbas Mahdi Mohamed
 Answer in writing

On 26 March 2015, the secretary-general of the Bahraini opposition political party the Unitary National Democratic Assemblage, Fadhel Abbas, was arrested in Bahrain. On that same day, his party issued a public statement denouncing the Bahraini involvement in the war in Yemen. On 28 June, Fadhel Abbas was sentenced to five years in prison for ‘spreading false information that could damage military operations of Bahrain and its allies and calling for resistance’.

Human rights defenders, political activists and peaceful protesters are continuously deprived of their right to freedom of expression and association. Bearing in mind that the European External Action Service is looking closely at the precarious human rights situation in Bahrain, and considering the EU human rights guidelines on freedom of expression online and offline adopted in 2014 and the new EU action plan on human rights and democracy adopted in 2015:

Will the VP/HR Federica Mogherini publicly call for the immediate and unconditional release of Fadhel Abbas, together with all the prisoners of conscience and political activists detained in Bahraini prisons?
