Question for written answer E-013001-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marian Harkin (ALDE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Former Al-Wefaq member of the Bahraini Parliament Sheik Hasan Isa
 Answer in writing

On 18 August 2015, a former Al-Wefaq member of the Bahraini Parliament, Sheik Hasan Isa, was arrested by government security forces upon landing with his family in Bahrain’s airport. Sheik Hasan Isa resigned his parliamentary position following a government assault on peaceful protesters during the Bahrain uprising in 2011.

Upon his arrest he was transferred to the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation, which is notorious for conducting torture and ill-treatment. Sheikh Hasan Isa was held for over 48 hours without charge and his lawyers were not allowed to see him or sit in during his interrogation. He was arrested on charges related to ‘financing terrorism among terrorist fugitives and others who are associated in terrorist acts’. None of these charges are supported by evidence.

On 7 September, the Public Prosecution Office in Bahrain renewed the detention of Sheikh Hasan Isa for another 15 days.

His arrest is the latest in a series of detentions undertaken by the government against opposition political figures. Bearing in mind that the European External Action Service (EEAS) is looking closely at the human rights situation in Bahrain, and taking into account the new EU action plan on human rights and democracy adopted in 2015:

What action will the EEAS be taking to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of Sheik Hasan Isa?
