Thermoelectric power plant in Cerano

Question for written answer E-013490-15
to the Commission
Rule 130
Rosa D'Amato (EFDD)

The thermoelectric power plant in Brindisi, in the Cerano area, is a coal-fired power station with a total installed capacity of 2640 MW.

This power plant has problems, such as the dispersion of dust from the conveyor belt and of carbonyl from the plant itself. This has led to legal action being taken by the Italian authorities against those responsible for the plant. Another important issue concerns the discovery of illegal trafficking in hazardous waste, which has been unlawfully disposed of in Calabria instead of being dealt with in a legal manner.

Recent studies carried out by Italian researchers have shown that where there are emissions from industrial installations leading to the formation of secondary particulates, this should be taken into consideration in environmental and health impact assessments.

The survey carried out specifically at the Brindisi power plant indeed showed that ignoring the role of secondary particulate matter means considerably underestimating the impact the plant has on the health of the local population.
