Subject:  VP/HR — Case of Kamal Foroughi
 Answer in writing

In May 2011, British-Iranian dual national Kamal Foroughi (then 71 years old, now 76) was taken without charge to Evin Prison in Tehran where he is still being held and where he is serving an eight-year sentence. We were informed that Mr Foroughi is not allowed visitors and has been deprived of medical care throughout his detention. In 2013, he was found guilty of espionage although no evidence was produced to justify the charge.

1. Is the VP/HR aware of this case? If so, what is her assessment of it?

2. Have the VP/HR and/or the EEAS raised the issue of Kamal Foroughi’s detention with the Iranian authorities?
