Question for written answer E-001293-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Ashley Fox (ECR)

 Subject:  EU transport projects: Baltic Railway from Helsinki to Vilnius
 Answer in writing

I have been contacted by residents and business owners in the South-West of England regarding the EU transport project for a Baltic Railway from Helsinki to Vilnius and the delays in completing the planned project. The Warsaw-Vilnius line, work on which was suspended two years ago, forms part of the larger European project for a new Baltic rail service that will eventually provide rail travel all the way from Warsaw to Helsinki. Until this line is completed, the journey between Warsaw and Vilnius will require either a 17-hour trip passing through Belarus, or a 10-hour drive on poor-quality roads.

Can the Commission state:
1. what is the current status of this project and what are the dates by which each stage is to be completed;
2. what are the scheme’s projected budgets, including the amount already spent;
3. since I am concerned at the lack of transparency regarding this otherwise worthy project, where EU citizens can find up-to-date information on it?
