Demographic decline is one of the greatest challenges faced by a large number of EU Member States. Reasons for the decline include low birth rates affecting replacement rates, the reduction in the number of young people and the ageing of the population. The EU needs to find solutions and introduce policies to tackle the challenge of demographic decline, without focusing solely on the ageing population as it has done so far.

In its report on the implementation, results and general evaluation of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations (2012) (2014/2255 (INI)), approved in September 2015, Parliament calls on the Commission to carry out a study on the demographic decline, which affects an increasing number of regions in various Member States, and to prepare a communication on this major challenge.

When will the Commission carry out its study on demographic decline?
