The Committee of the Regions opinion entitled ‘Indicators for territorial development: GDP and beyond’ proposes, with regard to the programming period after 2020, that the Commission initiate an in-depth discussion with local and regional bodies as soon as possible on future cohesion policy objectives and the most suitable indicators for measuring progress in Europe's regions. The Committee of the Regions calls on the Commission ‘to present a roadmap which goes beyond GDP’.

In that context, it is important that demographic decline — which is affecting a growing number of regions in a number of Member States — along with population characteristics, such as dispersion, are taken into account in the programming period after 2020.

1. Will the Commission present a roadmap which goes beyond GDP?

2. Is the Commission considering including demographic decline and population characteristics as indicators in the programming period after 2020?
