Question for written answer E-005252-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Jeppe Kofod (S&D)

Subject:  Animal welfare and the mink industry
 Answer in writing

In the Commission's answer to my Question E-013262/2015 of 10 December 2015 regarding poor animal welfare in the fur industry, the Commission refers to the industry's own assessment programme Welfur as the way to improve welfare for farmed fur animals in the EU. However, recently two extensive critical reports have analysed both the fur industry(1) and Welfur(2).

In light of the above, the Commission is kindly asked to answer the following:
1. In which Member States is the Welfur programme currently up and running and what percentage of all EU fur farms are currently covered by the programme?
2. Is the Commission aware of the two recent critical reports and will the Commission comment on the problems and short-comings of the Welfur programme outlined in the report?
