Question for written answer E-006302-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Dominique Bilde (ENF)

Subject:  Reconstruction of animal house on the Nancy-Brabois (54) biology-health campus
 Answer in writing

On 28 January 2016 a public-private partnership was signed for the construction of the biology-health campus of the University of Lorraine in Brabois. This contract forms part of the Biology-Health section of the Lorraine Campus Plan.

This overall project has a budget of EUR 67.3 million. It provides, in particular, for the reconstruction of the animal house for medical research purposes, covering an area of 1 850 m2. By the end of 2017 animals, both small and large, will be kept there.

1. Can the Commission say whether this project has received any EU subsidies? If so, what are the figures involved?2. Can it say what reason(s) could be used to justify the granting of such subsidies, when Directive 2010/63/EU encourages the reduction of experiments on animals?3. What is the EU budget used for the development of alternative methods to animal testing?
