Antitrust proceedings against AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai

Question for written answer E-006988-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Tunne Kelam (PPE)

On 5 January 2015, the Commission announced that it had sent a statement of objections to AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai for removing a railway track between Lithuania and Latvia and failing to rebuild that track. The Commission indicated that it was concerned that these actions may have limited competition on the rail markets in Lithuania and Latvia.

Is the Commission aware that this case is of interest throughout the Baltic region, including Estonia, and not only in Latvia and Lithuania?

The Commission took four years to issue a statement of objections following its unannounced inspections in Baltic countries in March 2011, and it has now been more than 18 months since the statement of objections was issued.

What will the Commission do to ensure that the reconstruction of the track is undertaken with minimum delays, and how will it monitor this process to avoid further inconsistencies?
