Question for written answer E-008426-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Jeppe Kofod (S&D)

 Subject:  Routine tail-docking of pigs
 Answer in writing

Further to the Commissioner’s answer to Written Question E-006506/2016, which includes a reference to Commission Recommendation (EU) 2016/336 of 8 March 2016:

1. Does the Commissioner know whether the aforementioned recommendation has brought about any changes in the practices used or the guidelines in force, etc., in the Member States?
2. Has the Commission carried out any follow-up as regards the implementation of and compliance with the recommendation, and if so, what form has that taken?

The Commissioner has made it clear in previous meetings that the Commission is ready to intervene where Member States are still failing to comply with EU legislation in the shape of Council Directive 2008/120/EC, and that one of the reasons for drawing up the recommendation was to ensure that the Member States were aware of the rules in force.

3. With that in mind, when does the Commission expect to be in a position to ascertain the extent to which the Member States are still failing to comply with the rules?
