Question for written answer E-008436-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Mark Demesmaeker (ECR)

Subject:  Research into alternative production methods for foie gras
 Answer in writing

In his answer to Written Question E-006658/2016, Commissioner Andriukaitis states ‘… the Commission has received information from a Member State about ongoing research. To ensure accuracy of the information provided, and to maintain the trust-based cooperation between Member States and the Commission at working level, the Commission considers that the Member States concerned are in principle better placed to provide this information.’

1. Can the Commission indicate from exactly which Member State it has received information? That will enable me to contact the authorities in the Member State concerned directly to obtain further information about the research in progress.

2. Does the Commission intend to launch an initiative with regard to the four other Member States that produce foie gras and which — according to previous answers from the Commission — have not yet conducted any research into alternative production methods which do not use gavage, as recommended by the Council of Europe?
