9 June 2017
Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-001178/2017

The EU has condemned the attempted coup in Turkey and stated that any wrongdoing or crime should be subject to due process, in full respect of rule of law and fundamental freedoms.

The Commission notes the position of the Turkish authorities that Fethullah Gülen and the respective Movement was responsible for organising the failed coup attempt on 15 July 2016, which the latter in turn has publicly denied. The Commission is closely following developments, including the results of the investigations against those suspected of involvement in failed coup attempt.

The Intelligence Analysis and Situation Centre of the European Union (EU INTCEN) is an assessment staff which delivers timely situational awareness and analysis based on classified intelligence contributions from EU Member States' Intelligence and Security Services only. Hence, there is no cooperation between EU INTCEN and the Turkish authorities.
