Question for written answer E-002003-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Marlene Mizzi (S&D)

Subject:  Animal welfare policies and the feelings of European citizens
 Answer in writing

Eurobarometer recently conducted a survey examining the attitudes of European citizens towards animal welfare. An overwhelming majority of European citizens declared their commitment to more concrete and effective animal welfare policies.

How does the Commission intend to act on these considerations? What concrete policies does it intend to launch to achieve higher satisfaction levels among European citizens demanding more animal welfare friendly policies?

The animal welfare policy package was adopted by the European Union in 1995, yet relatively few policy developments followed. The package covered all animals under one unique policy framework, but without distinguishing between different families and different roles in the animal world.

Does the Commission intend to launch a new animal welfare policy package encompassing any new animal welfare evidence that has emerged over the past twenty years?
