The brewing industry in France

Question for written answer E-002205-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Dominique Bilde (ENF) , Edouard Ferrand (ENF) , Philippe Loiseau (ENF)

Brewing is a major agrofood sector, on account both of its contribution to farming and its distribution circuits, and it is a vital economic asset for agriculture in Europe and in France. In France, it provides employment for nearly 64 000 people (both direct and indirect jobs), with a turnover of EUR 12 billion, including 4 500 people and EUR 2 billion in brewing alone, as well as 3 000 people and EUR 1 billion in agriculture, while the remainder of the figures includes cafés and restaurants.

Currently, there are more than 800 breweries in France (the third most of any European country), whereas 30 years ago only 22 remained.

— What measures can the Commission take to support this industry in France and in Europe generally?— How can the Commission encourage production of malt, hops and brewing barley, while ensuring that farmers receive a fair and decent reward?
