Rule 130

Subject:  Budget for animal welfare package
 Answer in writing

Debates in the European Parliament’s Environment and Agriculture Committees have included several discussions about the need to draft and subsequently adopt a new animal welfare legislative package. In this context, Members have often reported that when the Commission is asked to take the lead on the draft, it has always stated that the DG SANTE budget is not large enough for such actions. In 2016, the Commission undertook a major restructuring of DG SANTE, particularly with respect to the animal welfare unit.

Can the Commission clarify whether there is a sufficient budget to undertake these actions?

Can the Commission explain to what extent the restructuring of DG SANTE is related to the new animal welfare needs?

Can the Commission clarify the budgetary amount that should be allocated to the drafting and adoption of a new animal welfare package, and whether it considers it has enough qualified personnel at the moment to cover these actions?
