4 July 2017
Answer given by Mr Arias Cañete on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-003056/2017

The EastMed gas pipeline is one of the Projects of Common Interest (PCI) identified in line with the TEN-E Regulation. The project currently benefits from a grant assistance of up to two million euro to pre-FEED (Front-End-Engineering Design) preparatory studies under the Connecting Europe Facility programme.

The project has also applied to be included in the next, 3rd PCI list. The assessment of PCI candidates is ongoing. The Commission strongly supports the EastMed project, and looks forward to a rapid completion of the study phase with the full FEED.

The Eastern Mediterranean region has important quantities of gas for export on the basis of existing proven reserves, and there is widespread expectation that these reserves will significantly increase as further exploration continues.

The EU, with its policy to diversify the gas supply is an attractive market for East Med gas. The East Med pipeline project represents an important option among other existing and possible future evacuation routes for the export of gas from the region to the EU.
