4 September 2017
Answer given by Ms Creţu on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-004118/2017

Three projects, out of the four mentioned by the Honourable Member have been supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)(1).

According to the information provided by the regional authorities at the time of the submission of the closure documents, the state of play on the implementation of these projects can be summarised as follows:

The ‘Freight and passengers on the move in Puglia’ project is completed. However, the closure process is still going on and additional information on achieved results will be requested.
The ‘Doubling of the Bari-Sant'Andrea Bitetto line’ project has faced some delays. Therefore, a decision to phase parts of its implementation to the 2014-2020 period was taken in March 2017. The ERDF contributed to the amount of EUR 22.9 million to the first phase (2007-2013 period) and will contribute EUR 67.5 million to the second phase (2014-2020 period), which is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
The ‘Bari-Taranto railway line electrification’ project is completed with the physical outputs and the minimum structural standard services completed, including the logistic and functional technical characteristics. However, the Commission has requested additional information in the framework of the closure process to verify if the achieved results are in line with the Commission approval decision.

(1)‘More and better trains for Puglia’ project carried out by the Ferrovie Sud Est rail company was withdrawn from the Regional Operational Programme Puglia 2007-2013 by the regional authorities on 26 January 2017 since the planned works were not compatible with the closure deadline of the 2007-2013 period. The project will be financed by other sources.
