Subject:  Status of implementation of the EU Joint Way Forward on migration between Afghanistan and the EU: returns to Afghanistan
 Answer in writing

As follow-up to a letter received on 8 November 2017 in response to its request, on 20 November 2017 the LIBE Committee received confirmation from the Commission of the implementation of the Joint Way Forward (JWF) on migration issues between Afghanistan and the EU, which had been signed by the two parties on 2 October 2016.

The Commission has reported that a total of 8 325 people were returned to Afghanistan in 2016, including voluntary departures, and that since the entry into force of the JWF, a total of 17 charter flights have taken place, with 269 returnees on board.

In the light of the above:
1. From which Member States and airports did the 17 charter flights depart? Which Member States coordinated them, or were they coordinated by Frontex?
2. What was the gender and exact age of the 269 returnees on board those flights?
3. Can the Commission provide an exact breakdown of the total cost that Member States and/or the EU incurred in order to carry out the flights? Were the flights funded through the EU budget, including through Frontex or AMIF (direct or indirect management)?
