New landfill in Agira and compliance with Directive 92/43/EEC

Rule 130

On 25 October 2017 the Region of Sicily, led by Rosario Crocetta, approved a plan to build a special waste landfill in the locality of Serra Campana-Cote ad Agira, in the Province of Enna. According to the Agira municipal planning service, the landfill is to be sited at a distance ranging from at least 1.7 km to at most 2.4 km or so from Vallone di Piano della Corte, a reserve belonging to the European Natura 2000 network and currently listed as a site of Community importance (SCI).

That being the case, the municipality of Agira maintains that building the landfill should be ruled out according to the criteria of the regional special waste management plan whereby a location within a radius between 300 m and 2 km of the boundary of Natura 2000 areas must be deemed to militate against treatment plants of any type.

Does the Commission consider the landfill project to be compatible with Directive 92/43/EEC, which is intended to protect the natural and semi-natural habitats included in the Natura 2000 network?
