Answer given by High Representative /Vice-President Mogherini
Question reference: E-000042/2018

The European Union raises human rights issues, and specifically enforced disappearances, regularly with the Government of Bangladesh, in the framework of the EU-Bangladesh Joint Commission.

Recently, the European Union raised human rights issues at the EU-Bangladesh Subgroup on Good Governance, Human Rights and Migration, that took place on 24 April 2018 in Dhaka, where the issue of enforced disappearances was extensively discussed. The European Union expressed concerns about enforced disappearances and called for a strict application of the Rule of Law. A Joint press release, reflecting EU's concerns as regards enforced disappearances, was agreed and issued on 26 April 2018(1) as reflected in the Bangladeshi press(2).

The European External Action Service and the EU Delegation to Bangladesh are closely monitoring the human rights situation, including the enforced disappearances in Bangladesh. The EU will continue to raise human rights issues in the bilateral and multilateral levels, as appropriate, including in the framework of the EU-Bangladesh Joint Commission.
