Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-000745/2018

The EU is a strong supporter of The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), both in political terms and through its predictable and reliable financial support over several years.

On 15 March 2018, the High Representative/Vice-President participated in the Ministerial Conference on UNRWA in Rome, where more than 90 countries and international organisations discussed ways to secure financial support, how to help the Agency solve its financial crisis and how to move forward on essential reforms. The conference saw strong political support. Additional pledges of almost USD 100 million were announced by the international community.

The EU has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to support UNRWA's activities. The Commission decided to bring forward the EU's annual contribution of EUR 82 million(1). This was disbursed on 15 March 2018. The EU has committed itself to funding UNRWA at a similar level for the next two years. The EU will not be able to increase its contribution nor be able to compensate for substantial cuts by third parties, given the pressure on available funds.

Pending a final decision by the United States (US) on their total contribution to UNRWA in 2018, the EU has reiterated in its contacts with the US administration the importance for all donors to fulfil their commitments.
