Response to the European Parliament resolution on asbestos

Question for written answer E-000862-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Marina Albiol Guzmán (GUE/NGL)

On 14 March 2013, Parliament adopted an important resolution on asbestos-related occupational health risks and prospects for eliminating all existing asbestos. In that resolution, Parliament cited various EU directives on hazardous waste, environmental protection, public health and the health and safety of workers in emphasising the need for Member States to implement plans and programmes to completely eradicate asbestos from Europe. It is thought that asbestos causes around 300 deaths per year in Spain, which has the second-highest levels of asbestos in the EU, behind France.

Does the Commission monitor compliance with the relevant directives in any way, or the extent to which the Member States have taken steps in line with Parliament’s resolution?

Has EU funding been used to detect, compile inventories of, or eradicate asbestos?

Is there direct funding available to individuals for the handling and removal of asbestos from private properties?
