to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Dennis de Jong (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  VP/HR — Persecution of Baha'ís in Yemen
 Answer in writing

Violence against the Baha’í community in Yemen by Houthi rebels continues to increase in Houthi-controlled parts of the country. By September 2017, at least 7 Baha’ís had been imprisoned in Sana’a.

1. Is the VP/HR aware of the verdict issued on 2 January 2018 against Mr Hamed Kamal bin Haydara (who has been imprisoned since December 2013), a member of the Baha’í community in Yemen, sentencing him to be publicly executed due to his association with the Baha’í World Centre in Haifa?

2. What steps has the VP/HR taken, or is she going to take, to make sure that the death penalty will not be carried out?

3. What steps are being taken by the VP/HR against the persecution of Baha’ís in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen?
