Parliamentary questions
16 May 2018
Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini
Question reference: E-001078/2018

Supporting the work of human rights defenders is an integral part of EU's external action, including in its relations with Mexico. Protection of journalists and human rights defenders features prominently in the bilateral EU-Mexico High Level Dialogue on Human Rights.

The Dialogue takes place on a regular basis and provides a platform for open and frank exchanges on developments on both sides.

Through its Delegation in Mexico, the EU accompanies, on a regular basis, human rights defenders and ensures a follow-up of specific cases through demarches, statements and informal contacts with federal and state authorities.

The EU has condemned the assassination of members of the Comité por la Defensa de los Derechos Indígenas (CODEDI) in a local statement published on 16 February 2018 and called on the Mexican authorities for a swift and transparent investigation of the case to ensure full accountability and prevent impunity, as well as effective protection of human rights defenders.

The EU is firmly committed to continue using its regular political dialogue with the Government of Mexico, as well as the existing instruments and communication channels to support and promote respect for human rights defenders.
