Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-001832/2018

The EU continues to follow with interest the recent developments in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) with regard to social reforms, including on matters related to religious tolerance and moderation.

The reform drive undertaken by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his efforts to promote return in Saudi Arabia to a moderate Islam open to all religions indicate a willingness by the authorities to adapt the legal framework to societal demands.

Within this framework, the EU is following closely the school curricula and textbook review undertaken by the Saudi Ministry of Education to combat extremist ideologies. In particular, the EU is continuously monitoring the process of removal of material inciteful or intolerant towards people of other faiths.

The EU believes that additional measures are required in the KSA, on Religious Freedoms but also on broader Human Rights issues, and will continue to raise these with its Saudi counterparts as part of its bilateral dialogue and cooperation.
