E-002210-18
Question for written answer E-002210-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL)

 Subject:  Scientific opinion confirming that certain species of eucalyptus are invasive alien species
 Answer in writing

Spain’s Scientific Committee (an advisory body composed of some twenty independent scientists set up to advise the Spanish Wild Flora and Fauna Committee, Spain’s autonomous communities and the Spanish Government) recently published a unanimous report(1) which establishes, on the basis of available scientific data, the invasive nature of species of eucalyptus introduced into Spain, stating that ‘all of the following species should be included in Spain’s list of invasive alien species: Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. globulus, E. gomphocephala, E. gunnii, E. nitens and E. sideroxylon, as well as any other species of this genus destined for forestry, due to the high risk of invasion as a consequence of their biological, physiological and ecological characteristics’.

Given that, in its response to Question E-002717/2017, the Commission claimed to be unaware either of any risk analyses on eucalyptus, or of any request for eucalyptus to be included on the Union list of invasive species;

Could the Commission now study in detail the aforementioned report, and, in light of its analysis and recommendations, begin the process of having these species placed on the list of invasive alien species of Union concern as laid out in Article 4 of Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014?
