Opening accession negotiations with Albania and Macedonia

Question for written answer E-002372-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Sophie Montel (EFDD)

On 18 April 2018, we were informed that the European Commission had proposed to the Member States of the European Union that accession negotiations be opened with Albania and Macedonia.

After Serbia and Montenegro, these are a further two Balkan countries, which stand out owing to their high level of corruption and haphazard respect for human rights, and which are being offered the prospect of joining the EU.

What is the point of this new enlargement while Albania and Macedonia are infested with the mafia if it is not to allow them to receive the ‘fat’ subsidies paid for, notably, by French taxpayers?
