Question for written answer E-002453-18
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Salvatore Domenico Pogliese (PPE)

 Subject:  VP/HR — Protests in Nicaragua and repression by the Ortega government
 Answer in writing

In Nicaragua, numerous protests have erupted following proposals concerning the reform of the social security system presented by the government led by President Daniel Ortega. According to Nicaragua’s Centre for Human Rights, the protests, which were violently repressed by the police forces and the Sandinista National Liberation Front, have caused 30 deaths to date.

In addition, there are already several injured and missing people. This is a violent repression that aims to suppress legitimate forms of dissent voiced by broad swathes of the population, and in particular by young university students.

Can the High Representative therefore say:
1. What measures she intends to take in order to help Nicaragua get back to normal and help put an end to the violent repression of the protest marches;
2. In view of those repressive measures, what official position will the EU take against Daniel Ortega’s government?
