Parliamentary questions

Answer given by Ms Creţu on behalf of the Commission
Question reference: E-002581/2018

The Calabria region has stipulated a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rete Rerroviaria Italiana (RFI), the rail infrastructure manager, in order to prepare and implement the project entitled ‘Airport — Lamezia Terme Central Station — Germaneto — Catanzaro Lido’.

Following this MoU, on November 2017, RFI finalised a feasibility study, considering various options. Finally, the Calabria region and RFI selected an option which consists in i) the electrification of the line Lamezia Station — Catanzaro Lido, ii) a series of interventions on the rail line path in order to increase the commercial speed, and iii) a system of connections Lamezia airport — Lamezia train station based on bus rapid-transit system.

The solution chosen by RFI and Calabria region is in line with the strategy agreed during when approving the programme.

According to the information provided by the Calabria region, the total cost of the project eventually covered by the European Regional Development Fund might not exceed the minimum threshold that triggers the obligation to present a major project to the Commission, set at EUR 75 000 000 of total eligible costs(1). It means that there is no need to apply for a major project and, so far, Italy has not submitted an application related to this project.

Nonetheless, this topic will be discussed at the next monitoring committee. The managing authority has already committed to present a detailed time schedule and financial prospects for every component of this project, and an illustration of all the outputs and expected results.

The managing authority and the Commission have already agreed that all the components of this project should be carried out altogether, within the time obligations set out for the 2014-2020 programming period.

(1)In accordance with Article 100, Regulation (EU) 1303/2013.
