Question for written answer E-002612-18
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Nikolaos Chountis (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  VP/HR — Recognition by the US of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel
 Answer in writing

The provocative decision by the Trump administration to transfer the US Embassy to Jerusalem has sparked hostilities in the Gaza Strip, with the Israeli government launching a series of murderous attacks against Palestinian protesters.

Commission Vice-President Federica Mogherini has noted that Israel's use of force should be ‘proportionate’, and recommends that all sides show ‘maximum restraint’ — this, despite the fact that Israel is occupying a large part of Palestine, kills innocent citizens and protesters every day and denies the fundamental right of the Palestinian people to have its own independent state.

Can the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy say:

Does she intend to make ‘proportionate’ use of the diplomatic and political means available to the EU to force the Israeli government to stop its illegal and dangerous policy in the region, for instance by immediately suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement?

Does she know which EU countries are planning to follow the US and recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel?
