 Subject:  Transition to climate-friendly modes of transport
 Answer in writing 

The European Union aims to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases by 60% by 2050. In connection with this, there is also a target that 30% of all road transports with a distance of more than 300 km will switch to other modes by 2030.

In relation to these goals, short sea shipping has a very important role to play. Replacing road transport with short sea shipping would reduce the pressure on Europe's infrastructure, reduce traffic and noise around our cities, and most importantly, reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Nevertheless, many obstacles remain in place for short sea shipping to be a competitive alternative to road transport, and little seems to be done to change this situation. According to the latest available statistics, the total tonnage of short sea shipping is even at lower levels than they were in 2007.

1. In view of this, what is the Commission going to do about the administrative and bureaucratic barriers standing in the way of short sea shipping becoming a competitive alternative to road transport? 2. Given how underutilised short sea shipping is in terms of container transport, how does the Commission aim to encourage increased transport of containers via short sea shipping?
