Question for written answer E-003287-18
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marie-Christine Arnautu (ENF)

Subject:  VP/HR — Re-establishing close diplomatic ties with the Russian Federation
 Answer in writing

Since Crimea voted by referendum to join the Russian Federation in March 2014, many restrictive measures have been taken against the Russian government. Some of these measures have been extended until 2019. However, the re-election of Vladimir Putin for a fourth term on 18 March 2018 strongly confirms the support of the Russian people for their President’s policies.

Furthermore, the Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, has emphasised the importance of close cooperation with Russia, following the example of the Austrian coalition which is currently in power. The American President, Donald Trump, has called on the G7 to readmit Russia. He was supported by the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, who himself favours a review of the policy of international sanctions imposed on Russia. The fact that many heads of state have realised that it is important to work closely with Russia demonstrates a desire for reconciliation that must be encouraged.

Therefore, does the High Representative intend to also work on rebuilding trust and high-level cooperation with the Russian authorities, in particular by calling for sanctions to be lifted which are constraining European businesses and farmers and which are harming the good relationship between the peoples of Europe?
