Answer given by Ms Malmström on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-003489/2018

The European Union is committed to the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear related commitments, and is currently working together with the international community to preserve the agreement.

The Joint Commission that is responsible for overseeing implementation of the JCPOA met on 6 July 2018, expressed regret at the decision of the United States (US) to re-impose sanctions and discussed practical solutions to maintain the trade and investment relation and cooperation with Iran.

Although the situation today is not comparable to the one leading to the understanding with the US in 1998 that the Honourable Members refer to, the Commission is also engaging with the US for the purpose of protecting the legitimate interests of EU economic operators.

To the same end, the annex to the Blocking Statute has been updated and the lending mandate of the European Investment Bank has been extended. Other measures are taken at Member State level in close coordination with the measures taken at EU level to sustain cooperation with Iran in key economic sectors.

Additional measures may be considered, as appropriate, as the situation evolves.
