 Subject:  Food label tricks on the market
 Answer in writing 

The Food Information to Consumers Regulation (Regulation 1169/2011) states that food labelling should not be misleading to the consumers, yet there are many examples of food label tricks on the market: for instance, foodstuffs with pictures of fruit on the front but having low actual fruit content, or with the more expensive fruit shown on the front of the pack. There are also many cases of products described as ‘natural’, ‘traditional’ or ‘artisanal’ that use industrial ingredients, and products with wholegrain images and descriptions but with low actual wholegrain content.

Does the Commission recognise the extent of these loopholes, and what plans does it have to close them?

To what extent does the Commission see harmonised guidelines as a way forward for ensuring that consumers are not misled by deceptive food labelling?

What does the Commission make of requiring the fruit content of juices, smoothies and other processed fruit drinks to be expressed as a percentage on the front of the pack?
