Answer given by Mr Hahn on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-003886/2018

As the Honourable Member has certainly registered, the Commission noted in the 2018 Albania Report(1) that relations between Albania and Greece have intensified.

In the past months, and including in the context of his last visit to Albania in mid-July, the EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations has consistently encouraged Albania to keep up the commitment to good neighbourly relations and regional cooperation and maintain a constructive approach to the dialogue with Greece.

The Commissioner has also commended the determination by the two governments to resolve outstanding bilateral issues in a spirit of mutual understanding.

On the talks for the demarcation of the maritime border between the two countries he stressed that this is a bilateral matter that Greece and Albania are addressing. The Commissioner also noted that it is crucial to reach an agreement that is mutually acceptable to the two countries, for the benefit of the citizens on both sides. Under no circumstances did he refer to a ‘change of borders’.

The Commission will continue to encourage Albania to show commitment to reconciliation, good neighbourly relations and regional cooperation, which have been once more emphasised as prerequisites for accession in the strategy on ‘A credible Enlargement perspective for and enhanced EU engagement with the western Balkans’(2), adopted in February 2018.
