No-show clause adduced by airlines

Question for written answer E-004009-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Sergio Gutiérrez Prieto (S&D)

On purchasing an airline ticket, a consumer acquires the right to travel along a given route at specified dates and times and at a specified price. However, airlines frequently include a clause that arbitrarily requires users to take all connecting and associated flights. This non-show clause basically allows airlines to automatically cancel the return flight if users fail to take the outward flight (regardless of the reasons).

This is not only unfair but also unreasonable, since it deprives users of the rights they acquire on purchase of the ticket, causing inadmissible expense and inconvenience and forcing them to accept non-negotiable terms.

In view of the totally unacceptable treatment of users resulting from such terms, does the Commission intend to introduce some form of regulation to redress the balance that is currently weighted against users and in favour of the airlines?
