E-004385/2018(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Vella on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-004385/2018

The EU LIFE programme can co-finance projects in the field of integrated coastal zone management. The Multi-Annual Work Programme 2018-2020 under the thematic priorities for Water indicates that in the context of actions targeted at the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive(1), particular emphasis should be placed on emerging pressures and impacts, as well as fostering better integrated coastal management and maritime spatial planning.

The EU LIFE priority area for climate change adaptation includes preparedness for extreme weather events, notably in coastal areas, in the EU’s Outermost Regions as one of the priorities for funding.

The next calls for the implementation of the Multi-Annual Work Programme should be published in April 2019. To have an indication on the contents of calls, the 2018 and 2017 calls can be consulted on the LIFE website(2).

Several LIFE projects have been successfully implemented in the past in this area. More information can be found about these projects on the LIFE website(3).

Please note that the LIFE instrument is not designed to fund only studies. The projects have to include, inter alia, implementing actions followed by monitoring actions. Preparatory studies can be envisaged in the proposal if they support the design of concrete and appropriate implementing actions.

The Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises has been in charge of implementing the LIFE programme since 2014. More information on the various types of LIFE projects as well as on the concrete modalities of the calls for proposals can be found on its website(4).
