Question for written answer E-004691-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Roberta Metsola (PPE)

Subject:  Welfare of animals on farms
 Answer in writing

Council Directive 98/58/EC on the protection of animals kept for farming purposes provides for general rules for the protection of animals of all species kept for the production of food, wool, skin or fur or for other farming purposes, including fish, reptiles or amphibians. These rules are based on the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes.

Legislation has been further developed since that time to progressively improve the welfare of farmed animals.

However, the level of welfare of animals kept in farms in some Member States is very low and not in line with the rules established by the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes.

Can the Commission provide information on whether it will take initiatives to encourage Member States to effectively implement proper standards of animal welfare on farms?
