Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini
Question reference: E-004769/2018

The High Representative/Vice-President (HR/VP) is concerned about the recent arrest of Mr Biram Dah Adeid and Mr.Abdallahi Houssein Messoud. Together with the Members States represented in Mauritania and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Delegation of the European Union in Nouakchott is following this case with great attention.

While also considering the sensitive electoral context, the EU is in regular contact with the Mauritanian authorities, both in Nouakchott and in Brussels.

This dialogue with the Mauritanian authorities is even more important since MM. Dah Adeid and Messoud have been elected members of the National Assembly.

The HR/VP attaches particular importance to the situation of political and human rights defenders, to good governance and the rule of law in Mauritania which she raises not only within the ACP-EU Parliamentary Assembly, but also on the occasion of bilateral contacts with representatives of the Mauritanian Government.

This is also a common thread in regular political dialogue and in the cooperation programmes carried out by the EU in Mauritania.
