Question for written answer E-004934-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Nikolaos Chountis (GUE/NGL)

 Subject:  Pollution of the river Aliakmon with urban sewage and water protection and management measures

Alarmed by the pollution of the river Aliakmon with urban effluent from the town of Argos Orestiko, residents of Kastoria Prefecture have been protesting vigorously about this state of affairs.

The new sewerage network which received EU funding was completed and delivered in 2009, but it has never worked; as a result, the town’s wastewater ends up in the river Aliakmon through the old sewerage system.

Given the fact that:
- The city of Argos Orestiko does not have a biological purification plant, as required by European legislation (Directive 91/271/EEC, as amended by EU Directive 98/15/EC);
- The area where the pipelines discharge the wastewater has been declared a site of outstanding natural beauty and is a habitat for wildlife and the only ‘green lung’ for the town of Argos Orestiko;
- The area is protected by the European Natura 2000 Directive;
- Dozens of settlements and the city of Thessaloniki depend on the river Aliakmon for their water supply;

Can the Commission say:

Is it aware of the problem of the discharge of sewage into the river Aliakmon and the resulting pollution?

What steps does it intend to take to ensure that European legislation is implemented as regards both the collection, treatment and disposal of waste water and water protection and management?
